How to find an English speaking psychologist in Barcelona

Finding a psychologist is hard enough in your own language. This guide explains what to check when you are looking for an English speaking psychologist or therapist in Barcelona, and what to expect from a first contact.

4 min read

Many people who live in Barcelona, or are about to move here, want to talk to someone in English. Searching for "English speaking psychologist Barcelona" returns a long list of options, and it is not always clear how to compare them. These are the points we would check.

1. Which language is the therapy actually in?

"English speaking" can mean different things: a professional who works fully in English, one who can manage in English, or a practice where only the reception speaks it. Ask who you would see, and in which language the sessions would take place.

At AlfaBeta, the practice works in English, Spanish and Catalan depending on the professional, so we ask for your preferred language at the start and suggest someone accordingly. On the team page you can filter by "Works in English".

2. What kind of professional do you need?

A psychologist works with psychotherapy and with assessments. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can prescribe medication. Many situations are approached with a psychologist, and when it is relevant care is coordinated with psychiatry or medicine.

If you are not sure where to start, describe the reason for consulting and ask which professional could suit it. You do not need a diagnosis to ask.

3. Check training and registration

In Spain, psychologists who work in healthcare hold the qualification of Psicólogo General Sanitario and a professional registration number. A serious practice shows the training, experience and languages of each professional. You can see these details in the profiles on our team page.

4. In person or online?

Both are possible at AlfaBeta, depending on the reason for consulting and the conditions of the work. Some assessments and direct work with young children need to be in person. If you will be outside Spain, tell us where, so we can check that the service can be provided.

5. What happens when you get in touch

A short message is enough: the reason for consulting in a few words, the age of the person concerned, your preferred language and your availability. You do not need to send reports or clinical details at this stage.

Before booking, we explain the appointment format, fees and who you would see. The practice is at Via Augusta, 42, close to Gràcia, and we can arrange morning appointments if you prefer.
