Therapy in English in Barcelona: what to expect

If you have never had therapy in Spain, or never in English, it helps to know how the process works. This guide describes what usually happens from the first message to the first sessions.

4 min read

Starting therapy in a new country can feel like two steps at once: finding the right person and deciding whether to begin. Here is how the process usually works at our practice.

Why people consult

We see people with anxiety, sadness or low mood, relationship difficulties, grief, stress and personal or work changes, including the changes that come with moving abroad. You do not have to be able to explain exactly what is happening to you: the first appointment helps to organise what you want to discuss.

The first appointment

The first appointment helps us understand the context and decide whether psychotherapy, or another kind of support, may be appropriate. We then discuss goals, frequency and the way of working, and we review progress as the process goes on.

How many sessions you will need depends on your goals, the difficulties and how things develop. The proposal is explained before the work begins.

Why language matters

Many people find it easier to put feelings into words in the language they think and feel in. That is why we ask for your preferred language at the start, and why we suggest a professional who works in it.

In person or online

We see people in person at Via Augusta, close to Gràcia, and online when age, the reason for consulting and the conditions of the work allow it. We agree the format with you.

What we do not offer

We do not offer couples therapy, and AlfaBeta does not provide an emergency service. We provide outpatient care; if a situation needs more intensive care, we can advise on appropriate services.

Frequently asked questions

What approach do you use?

Our team brings together different psychotherapy backgrounds. Once we understand why you are consulting, we suggest a professional whose background suits your needs.

Can I ask for a morning appointment?

Yes. Let us know when you get in touch, and we will confirm the options available.

What should I tell you in the first message?

A short description of the reason for consulting, the language you prefer and your availability is enough.
